Hotel Laundry Equipment — Speed Queen vs Continental Service Economics

Picking between Speed Queen Commercial and Continental Girbau for a 120-room hotel laundry isn't a purchase decision — it's a 10-year service economics decision. A field tech's read on parts availability, motor life, and total cost of ownership.

Commercial service call: $89Same-day dispatch

A Miami Beach 120-room hotel is in year 8 of a Continental Girbau on-premise laundry installation. Three of the eight washers have been rebuilt twice. The bearing failures cluster in the second and third year of service, and the parts lead time has stretched to 10 to 14 days as Continental's North American distribution has shifted. The director of operations is asking whether the next replacement cycle should switch to Speed Queen Commercial. The answer depends on how you weigh upfront cost, parts availability in South Florida, and what your in-house engineering team can actually service. This is the field-tech read.

1. Speed Queen vs Continental — what's actually in the box

Speed Queen Commercial is owned by Alliance Laundry Systems (Ripon, WI). The hotel-grade machines are the SC, SX, and SY series — soft-mount washer-extractors from 18 to 100 pounds. They're built with the same drive system, motor, and inverter as the on-premise laundry (OPL) line that runs in laundromats nationwide. Parts inventory in South Florida is deep — Sunshine Laundry and a half-dozen other distributors carry the high-wear parts on the shelf.

Continental Girbau (Oshkosh, WI, US arm of the Spanish Girbau Group) makes a heavier-duty soft-mount machine — the E-series at 20 to 255 pounds. Steel construction is heavier, the suspension is European-spec, and the inverter drives are Yaskawa or equivalent industrial-grade. The machines are demonstrably more durable per cycle but the parts ecosystem in South Florida is thinner — most parts route through Continental's Wisconsin warehouse.

2. The upfront cost — and what it hides

A Speed Queen SC60 (60-pound soft-mount) installs around $11,800 to $13,400 in Miami including freight, install, and basic plumbing. A Continental Girbau E-series 60-pound installs around $15,200 to $17,800. The Continental costs roughly 25 to 30 percent more upfront.

The cost difference comes from the heavier frame, the larger drum, and the European-spec components. The Continental will physically last longer per cycle. The math question is whether the longer service life and the marginally better extract performance justify the upfront delta — and the answer depends entirely on your hotel's wash volume.

3. Wash volume per machine — the deciding number

A 120-room hotel runs roughly 280 to 360 pounds of laundry per occupied night. At 70 percent occupancy that's about 70,000 to 90,000 pounds per year. Spread across 8 washers, each machine sees 8,750 to 11,250 pounds per year — about 175 to 225 cycles. At that volume, both Speed Queen and Continental will hit their nominal service life. The Speed Queen pays back faster on upfront.

A 300-room hotel running 220,000 to 280,000 pounds per year through the same 8 washers — about 460 to 580 cycles per machine annually — stresses the components harder. At that volume the Continental's heavier construction earns its premium. Speed Queens at that volume hit their wear points 18 to 30 months earlier than the Continentals would.

4. Parts availability in South Florida — the practical reality

Speed Queen high-wear parts (door seals, bearings, drive belts, inverters) are on the shelf at multiple Miami distributors. Average part-acquisition time for a Speed Queen failure: under 24 hours, often same-day. Continental parts route through Wisconsin for anything beyond the most common consumables. Average part acquisition for a Continental drive bearing or inverter: 4 to 10 business days.

For a hotel running 8 washers, one machine down for 7 days is manageable — you slow the rotation and the others absorb the volume. For a hotel running 4 washers, one machine down for 7 days is a real operational hit. Smaller fleets benefit disproportionately from the Speed Queen parts ecosystem. Larger fleets can absorb the Continental parts wait because they have more redundancy.

5. The service-call profile — what breaks, in what order

Speed Queen SC and SY series — typical failure sequence over 10 years: door seal at 18 to 28 months, drain valve at 30 to 42 months, drive belt at 36 to 54 months, bearings at 60 to 84 months. Most are bench-fix repairs that a competent in-house engineer can handle with parts on hand. Service calls average $280 to $480 plus parts.

Continental E-series — typical failure sequence: door seal at 24 to 36 months (heavier seal lasts longer), inverter board at 42 to 60 months (industrial-grade boards still fail in South Florida humidity), bearings at 84 to 120 months. Fewer service calls but higher per-call cost because the inverter board replacement is a $1,200 to $1,800 part and the bearing job on a heavier frame is a longer labor ticket. Service calls average $480 to $1,200 plus parts.

6. The 10-year total cost of ownership — actual numbers

For a 120-room hotel at moderate volume, 8 washers over 10 years: Speed Queen TCO including upfront, all service, all parts: roughly $148,000. Continental TCO same scenario: roughly $172,000. Speed Queen wins by about $24,000 over the decade, plus the parts-availability advantage that reduces operational disruption.

For a 300-room hotel at high volume, 8 washers over 10 years: Speed Queen TCO around $188,000 including a likely mid-life replacement on 2 machines. Continental TCO around $192,000 with no mid-life replacements. Effectively a tie on dollars, with Continental winning on operational uptime if the parts-lead-time risk is managed (i.e., critical-spares kit on site).

7. What we'd actually recommend

Under 200 rooms or moderate volume: Speed Queen Commercial. Parts ecosystem and lower upfront cost win on TCO and on operational simplicity. 200 to 400 rooms or higher volume: depends on whether your engineering team can manage a critical-spares kit. If yes, Continental. If no, Speed Queen. 400+ rooms or heavy 24/7 operation: Continental, with a contracted critical-spares program (inverters, bearings, door seals stocked on site).

Multi-property hospitality groups should standardize on one brand across the portfolio. The parts logistics and engineer-training savings outweigh any per-property optimization. A Marriott or Hilton facilities lead managing 15 properties wants to call one distributor for everything, not coordinate two parts ecosystems.

8. Service contract structure for hotel laundry

Quarterly preventive visits: drain valve inspection, door seal inspection, drive belt tension, bearing-sound check, inverter board temp scan. Annual deep service: bearing greasing, drum balance check, suspension inspection, calibration of the inverter to OEM spec. Emergency dispatch with under-8-hour response for hospitality clients running 24/7.
